iPhone 2.2 was released and it’s a nice little update. It includes a little bit of polish to a few applications that needed it and adds a couple extra features that are just neat. I like that I can now check out street view on Maps. I also like that I can download podcasts over the air. Both great new features, but I can’t see anything included in the 2.2 update that some people think they really need. Need is a strong word. I guess none of us really NEED any of the extra’s, but there are still some nagging issues that have been mentioned a million times.. So why not make it a million and one?

  • MMS Support. I don’t see this coming to the iPhone via official Apple means. Apple thinks Mail is the next MMS and they are probably right. In the mean time, though, we need something until the mobile world transitions from MMS and SMS messages to email. Third party applications could help here, but we will have to see how those work out whenever they arrive. My idea is for some sort of network proxy.

AT&T already catches incoming MMS messages for me and instead of sending me that MMS message, they send me a text with a url and username/password for viewing the picture. This is the worst solution ever and I can’t believe the minds that moved people to visual voicemail and the minds behind the iPhone in general couldn’t think of a more elegant solution to this. What we need is for AT&T to offer some sort of option on their website for an email proxy. I can enable the option and supply a push email account I have (or maybe at&t could offer me one?) and when I get an MMS message, instead of sending me a text with some horseshit url on it, it could just forget that and forward the whole MMS message to the email address I supplied. Considering that AT&T is already ‘doing something’ with the MMS, I can’t see how this would be a hard thing for them to impliment. It would make it easy for me to still receive MMS messages by just checking my email. Get to work, AT&T!

  • Copy and Paste. This is one I do and don’t understand why it hasn’t been implemented. Apple has a weird way about them. They like to make things that work REALLY well. If they can’t think of an elegant way to make something work intuitively, they don’t do it at all. This is my reasoning behind not adding copy and paste. I can’t think of a really awesome way for them to add the gesture needed to make copy and paste work. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed on this one because it would be a great feature to have.
  • Video Support. Again, probably something about not getting it to work 100% well is preventing this one. Jailbroken applications have had video support for a while now but the best video I’ve seen is at about 15 fps. Eh. I like fluid video. I don’t know if a hardware limitation, but I can’t think of any other reason. Maybe it’s giving them a reason to introduce the ‘iPhone Video’ next year or something.. with that kick double sided camera and probably a way to film full 30fps videos. I actually just thought of that while writing right now but it really doesn’t sound too far fetched. Look out for the iPhone Video in July 2009! You heard it here, first!
  • Option for that stupid double beep for texts. When I get a text message, I usually just glance at my screen and read it. If it’s long and looks important, I’ll grab my phone, unlock it and read the full message. But usually, this isn’t the case. Usually it’s Facebook telling me about someone’s new status or something stupid like that that doesn’t need my attention. I understand why some people might like that their phone beeps again 5 minutes after they get a text to remind them about it, but I don’t. I hate it actually. Makes me think I have another text message, but when I glance at my phone again, I just see the same message I read before. Just give ME the option to not remind me about a text I haven’t read read. Hopefully this option comes soon!
  • Download music over 3G. Why can’t we do this? We can download podcasts. Most podcasts that I’m interested in are videos. So I can stream them now but I still can’t download a song that might be 5MB? That’s just stupid. If I’m out and hear a song that I like but am not near a wifi spot, I could be able to download that song if I want. I also hope this option goes against my topic.

Those are the main things I can think of. The 2.2 update added some cool stuff and all but there are still so many things that so many people feel are lacking from the OS. I know that the last 2 things go against my topic because it’s very possible we’ll see those features in some form in 2.x. I was just on a roll writing about things I thought were missing. Let’s go Apple, get on it!

Download music over 3G is one of most missing function in iPhone.

Totally agree. I don’t even buy that much music via iTunes but it’s baffled the hell out of my why you can’t download over the air via 3G .. I’d actually probably impulse buy more music if I could download a song while I was out somewhere without wifi.

No MMS Support and internal battery is a little miss understanding but all the rest makes my iPhone the best phone ever.
